Youssouf Bath was born in Tabou, Cote d'Ivoire. Regarded as a highly experimental artist, Bath was a key figure in the Vohou Vohou movement in the 1980s, where artists sought to use local materials, including found objects and pigments from native plants and minerals to express an independent version of African art history and culture. His works have been said to create a dreamlike universe where man is brought to the origin of things to better understand the present.
A member of the Pan African Circle of Artists (PACA), Bath currently teaches art in Dabou, Cote d'Ivoire and continues to exhibit widely both in Cote d'Ivoire and abroad. Major group exhibitions included 1990's "Contemporary African Artists: Changing Traditions" at the Studio Museum, New York. Bath's work is held by Museum Urbain Tony Garnier in Lyons, France.
