NEWS Latest Update : 20 January 2011 JANUARY FOCUS: BRATBY & FIELDING
This month, in anticipation of our showing at the 20/21 International Art Fair at the Royal College of Art next month, we are highlighting works by two RCA graduates in the 1950s. John Bratby needs little introduction, having stolen headlines as a student and rarely remained out of them even after his death. The works we are showing illustrate the consumate draftsman he was, bold, confident and a superb portraitist. Brian Fielding on the other hand, though an extremely influential artist and teacher, was a quieter, lesser known and more cerebral figure. In our opinion his abstracts are amongst the best produced in Britain in the post-war period.
Latest additions & news:
Some sad news. Chris Sturgess-Lief, a fine artist and a wonderful man, passed away in December. One of Gallery One ownerVictor Musgrave's favourite artists, Chris consistently underestimated the power and quality of his art.
In late 2011 we added a vibrant and large Jack Smith 1993 oil to the site, a major 1963 work by Indian artist Avinash Chandra and two Frank Avray Wilson oils from the early 1960s. Since then we have also put on two new John Bratbys, a Brian Fielding and a 1959 John Christoforou oil.
Date for the diary: we will be showing at the 20/21 International Art Fair at the RCA 16th-19th February. Complimentary tickets now available.
Our second site at www.2021modernart.com, displays works falling outside the core Red Raven remit. This includes more realist styles and a wider variety of artists from 'developing' countries in the mid-late 20th century.
We are always interested in purchasing quality paintings from 1950s-1970s, whether from UK, Europe, Africa, Asia or the Americas.
